Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has congratulated Penpa Tsering on election as the new Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration, saying the US stands with the people of Tibet.
In a letter to Penpa Tsering on 25 May, she wrote, “the Tibetan people will be well-served by the experience that you bring to this post after a long and distinguished career in public service.”
“More than 60 years after His Holiness was forced into exile, the resilience of the Tibetan people continues to inspire the world. Courageously standing strong against Beijing’s repressive grip, the CTA has helped ensure that survival of your beautiful language, vibrant culture, and religious harmony.”
Nancy Pelosi is one of the biggest forces in supporting the Tibetan cause in US politics. She has met with the Dalai Lama, the symbol of Tibet and the Tibetan people, on a number of occasions, and has visited him in McLeod Ganj in 2017 and 2008.
“Now more than ever, your resolute voice and tireless leadership as Sikyong will be necessary to carry on this vital tradition and advance the cause of peace,” Pelosi wrote in the letter.
“Today and always, America is proud to stand with you and the people of Tibet. Congratulations again, President Tsering, on your election, and best wishes for success in your new role!”
