In the latest attempt to tighten its grip in Tibet, China is forcing the Tibetans to pay less attention to their religion and show more enthusiasm for president Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), according to a report by The Economist.
Beijing has also intensified its efforts to eradicate the Dalai Lama from the religious lives of Tibetans to crush their identity.
The Chinese government occupied Tibet in 1950 and has ever since tried to control the region.
The Dalai Lama, whom China views as overseer of an “evil clique” that seeks to split Tibet from China, escaped to India in 1959 and the 10the Panchen Lama (Lobsang Trinley Lhundrup Choekyi Gyaltsen) stayed behind in Tibet. He spoke against Chinese rule many times and wrote a report chronicling Tibet’s famines in the 1960s.
As per The Economist, the Tibetan religion like that of Muslim followers in Xinjiang is undergoing what the CCP term as “sinicisation”.
In Tibetan and Xinjiang, the Chinese authorities have launched attacks on people’s religion and cultural traditions.
While the Uyghurs have been moved to “re-education camps”, the Tibetan farmers have been moved to modern housing in or near towns and cities. Moreover, the Tibetan language has been replaced with Mandarin similar to that in Xinjiang.
“Surveillance has been stepped up. Networks of informers relay information to the state; smartphones are tapped. Just as Uyghurs can no longer make pilgrimages to Mecca, it has become almost impossible for Tibetans to travel to India to attend religious teachings given by the Dalai Lama, as many did before Xi took power in 2012,” The Economist said.
Unlike the Uyghurs, the Tibetans are allowed to use social media apps such as WeChat but with restrictions such as posting images of Dalai Lama can be an imprisonable offence.
“It seems these policies are aimed at creating future Tibetans who will not know about the Dalai Lama as having any role in Tibetan Buddhism except as an enemy,” Robbie Barnett, a scholar of Tibetan culture, was quoted as saying by The Economist.
Middle Way policy is a joke. This will fail as the 17-point Agreement signed in 1951.
Assuming that China negotiates with Dalai Lama and Lobsang Sangay, and felicitate their return, and agree with Middle-way terms. Also, what if HH returns to Tibet, and then poison him? In that sense, the call for the return of the Dalai Lama maybe asking for problems.
Tibetans seem to believe that China will keep their promise after the negotiation. Hong Kong was given Middle Way, better than our version, but slowly, the control of Hong Kong is intensifying. What can the world do? Nothing!
Best way to move forward is to demand independence by 70% of the Tibetan exiles, while CTA keeps Middle Way. Rangzen people can make China come to the table to talk about Middle-way as a compromise. (Even though that too will be disregarded later). But there’s no point in asking for Autonomy when they say autonomy was already given in 1951.
And that treaty is binding on nation states, albeit that it was done under duress with forged stamp. The point of forced treaties being valid is because it is thought to be better than an all-out war. China must have killed like 5 million people if that treaty wasn’t signed!
Videos of Losar songs and dances show China has brought back Madame Mao’s frenetic jumps and garish costumes as “cultural performances”.
Mao’s attempt to wipe out nonChinese indigenous peoples caused so much suffering but XiXi LaLa is attempting the same in Tibet and East Turkistan.
The Chinese communist Party has been rightly labelled by our ancestors as Tendra Gya-mar,་ and indeed they are enemy of our faith. Right from the 1950s, they resorted to demolition of monasteries and murdering of the monks and nuns.
They sent the late brother of HH Taktse Rinpoche from Kumbum to Lhasa to assassinate the Dalai Lama in return for a high post in his locality. He met HH in Lhasa and warned Him of the unescapable danger to His life and made good his own escape to the US.
The CCP is bent upon to obliterate the religion, culture and the language of the Tibetan people in order to transform Tibetans into Chinese. It’s their ultimate aim. The Soviet Union disintegrated because it allowed the 15 Republics to retain their language and culture which became its undoing.
The CCP believes that unless and until the Tibetans/Uyghurs are totally subsumed, the danger of separation remains latent. That is why, they are determined to obliterate Tibetans as a race of people with their unique cultural and linguistic roots.
The only way to save our unique culture is to preserve it in the free world and at the same time fight for an independent Tibet. Only an independent Tibet can sustain our religious and linguistic heritage.
The late Taktse Rinpoche found TIM (Tibet Independence Movement) in Indiana in the US. He advocated complete independence for Tibet because he believed, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PRESERVE TIBET’S RELIGION AND LANGUAGE UNDER COMMUNIST CHINA. A letter was sent to all offices, monasteries and VIPs in the Tibetan community in 1990.
After 31 years since Taktse Rinpoche’s Letter was released, we are witnessing the veracity of his prophecy. Only strong international pressure would have any effect to stop the cultural genocide in Tibet.
