The first patients arrived Monday at a 1,000-bed hospital built in 10 days as part of China’s sweeping efforts to fight a new virus that is causing global alarm.
Huoshenshan Hospital and a second 1,500-bed facility due to open this week were built by construction crews who are working around the clock in Wuhan, the central city where the outbreak was first detected in December. Some 50 million people are barred from leaving Wuhan and surrounding cities.
The Wuhan treatment centres mark the second time Chinese leaders have responded to a new disease by building specialized hospitals almost overnight. As severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, spread in 2003, a facility in Beijing for patients with that viral disease was constructed in a week.
The first patients arrived at Huoshenshan Hospital at 10 am on Monday, according to state media. They gave no details of the patients’ identities or conditions.
The ruling Communist Party’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Army, sent 1,400 doctors, nurses and other personnel to staff the Wuhan hospital, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The government said earlier that some have experience fighting SARS and other outbreaks.
The state newspaper Beijing Daily applauded construction workers and suppliers who cut short their Lunar New Year holiday. It hailed the rapid construction as a political triumph, despite complaints leaders in Wuhan endangered the public by failing to respond fast enough to reports of a dangerous new disease.
“Today’s Chinese people are more deeply aware: where I stand is my China,” the newspaper said. “When this national sense of ownership is awakened, our mentality in the face of disasters becomes more mature.”
Authorities have cut most road, rail and air access to Wuhan and surrounding cities, isolating some 50 million people, in efforts to contain the viral outbreak that has sickened more than 17,000 people and killed more than 360.
Before this week’s addition of 2,500 new beds, Wuhan had 6,754 in hospitals designated for virus patients, according to the website TMTpost.com. It said authorities were considering assigning another 2,183 beds to virus cases at the city’s other hospitals.
The Huoshenshan Hospital was built by a 7,000-member crew of carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other specialists, according to Xinhua.
About half of the two-story, 60,000-square meter (600,000-square foot) building is isolation wards, according to the government newspaper Yangtze Daily. It has 30 intensive care units.
The name Huoshenshan means God of Fire Mountain. The second hospital, Leishenshan, means God of Thunder Mountain.
Newspapers published day-by-day accounts of crews clearing a riverside plot, laying the foundation, installing sewage and electrical equipment and assembling prefabricated rooms that were shipped to the site.
Photos in state media showed workers in winter clothing, safety helmets and the surgical-style masks worn by millions of Chinese in an attempt to avoid contracting the virus. Trucks were shown arriving in the middle of the night carrying rolls of insulation and other materials.
Doctors can talk with outside experts over a video system that links them to Beijing’s PLA General Hospital, according to the Yangtze Daily. It said the system was installed in less than 12 hours by a 20-member “commando team” from Wuhan Telecom Ltd.
The building has specialized ventilation systems and double-sided cabinets that connect patient rooms to hallways and allow hospital staff to deliver supplies without entering the rooms. It is equipped with infrared scanners to warn if any employees show signs of the disease’s distinctive fever, the website Economy Net reported, citing the company that provided the technology.
A Chinese company donated “medical robots” to deliver medicines and carry test samples, according to the Shanghai newspaper The Paper.
In other cities, the government has designated hospitals to handle cases of the new virus. In Beijing, the Xiaotangshan Hospital built in 2003 for SARS is being renovated by construction workers. The government has yet to say whether it might be used for patients with the new disease.

If reports finding are proven, then i am sure this is a way for Chinese government to engage in bio warfare. We are heralding a new century where weapon of such calibre has come into existence. Truly this is a bad example for other government to lobby their rights to engage in such art of war. President Xi has to come up with clear explanation which the world is awaiting in great anxiety to contain the deadly virus.
The virus has so far spread around the world like bush fire of Australia with no solution attached to it. Hope the Chinese government come up with an antidote for this virus. Luckily for us here in Nepal the situation hasn’t aggravated but sooner or later we are not sure about this pandemic.
There are rumours that Bill Gates created this coronavirus outbreak to reduce Chinese population. He was also rumoured to have created Ebola pandemic in West Africa in 2014. And even HIV/aids was created by him to be spread in Africa to keep their population down. We never know what these rich people and sly Americans are upto.
I hope China can contain this disease on time. I really suspect American hand in this issue. Truth is hidden, as big boys play secret games that shifts the whole society. maybe americans want to crush down on Asian race since we are rising fast, and it challenges white supremacy dominated by Judeo-Christian race. There is also the rumour that 2 Chinese scientists who worked at the Winnipeg microbiology lab were spies for China and smuggled the coronavirus from Winnipeg lab to the Wuhan level 4 lab. There was actually a news story in CBC in July last year about a husband and wife researcher at the Winnipeg lab who were escorted out of the lab by RCMP for policy breach. So, do you think there is a Canadian hand in it or a CCP hand in it to control their own population?
More likely answer is the wild animals and bush meat that some Chinese eat. We’ve all seen the pictures of the market place where they have all the live and the dead animals being sold next to each other. If the Chinese authorities don’t put a stop to that this kind of epidemic is bound to happen again and again. The CCP has been using repression as a weapon to subdue the Tibetan people for the last six decades. The Dalai Lama was dethroned and made an exile. Six million Tibetans are under severe state oppression which has resulted in the self-immolation of 155 Tibetans to date. Tibetans are not allowed to travel freely in our own country and even if they are, they are met with racial discrimination. They face severe difficulty in finding accommodation since, the Chinese don’t allow Tibetans in their hotels by saying, they are dirty and smelly. When they travel to China, Chinese people avoid sitting with Tibetans and leave their seats to go somewhere else. Even the electricity for Tibetans in Lhasa are dimmer with only one cable while the Chinese homes are lit with bright lights. Tibetan women are kidnapped and sold to Hui Muslims but the police turn a blind eye. There were signs in Lhasa which read to the tune of “200 yuan for Han, 50 yuan for Tibetans!! The revered Dalai Lama has been called a “devil with human head”, a “terrorist” even a “Nazi”!! Six million Tibetans are under unimaginable misery with the deprivation of their culture, religion and language. Yet, here we are, we have bleeding hearts who are more concerned about the aggressor, the enemy who mercilessly destroys every facet of our nation and it’s existence. Today, Tibet is only in the imagination of the Tibetan people. In reality, it has become “China”. It has disappeared from the face of the earth, thanks to the CCP and the Chinese people who support this regime. How do the CCP uses Chinese students and triad thugs to disrupt Tibetan demonstrations, the speech of Tibetan leaders in foreign countries including that of the Dalai Lama? It must be the Stockholm syndrome that some Tibetans have such love for China.
There are many cases of East Asians including Tibetans, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc facing racism in New york, toronto, london and elsewhere. People are moving away from the seats in buses and trains when they see an asian moving next to them.

I don’t consider that as racism. People should feel free to protect themselves. Even when it comes to the common cold or flu we’re asked to stay at home and not come to work as we may infect other people. and if somebody does show up to work with a virus others make it a point to stay away from the person and the person also understands. So, its not a big deal. Even in China, hotels and services in the other provinces are reported to be turning away people coming in from Wuhan because they’re scared. And to be honest, you will not see me going to a Chinese restaurant any time soon. (Unless its some fancy place where standards are maintained) They may have workers coming and going from China and also because i don’t trust what meat and stuff they use in the food. So yes, it is expected that restaurants and some other Chinese places will suffer some loss in the short term.
Also, i’ve seen a lot of the Chinese wearing the mask which just makes it worse as others assume that they have something. Westerners don’t wear the mask unless you have contracted something or you are dealing with sick patients with communicable disease.
If a westerner sees an Asian with a mask on then yes, they’re going to assume you have something.
Its commendable how they were able to build the hospital in 10 days. With technology things are done very differently now a days. With the plan in place it’s a matter of putting the blocks together like a Lego once the foundation is complete. What is interesting is that China seems to have rediscovered their mythology in this time of great tragedy naming the hospital as “Fire God Mountain Hospital” and the second one named “Thunder God Mountain Hospital”. I thought the communists didn’t believe in such things.
I do hope and pray that they are able to get it under control and this does not turn into a pandemic. I do feel bad even for the leadership but especially for the people who are affected, lets pray.

Everything is tightly controlled by the regime and this is therefore the reason, why the CCP closed the borders of Wuhan too late when the horse had already bolted. But now it’s acting the victimhood game again. The Chinese ambassador to Israel has likened the present world wide ban on Chinese travellers to the Jews being denied entry during the Holocaust!!
