Eight young women vying for the eighth edition of the Miss Himalaya Pageant crown were presented at a “Meet the Press” event earlier today.
Introducing the contestants to the press, the organisers said that they will be tested on their intelligence, talent, confidence, and poise, through competition rounds of Talk, Talent, Traditional costume, and Interview, judged by a three-member jury.
One contestant is from Uttarakhand, and the others are from various districts in Himachal Pradesh. The organiers have been campaigning to have contestants from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, as well as from other Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.
The contestants are all students pursuing various courses. The winner will receive a prize of one lakh rupees (about 1,400 USD), the first runner-up 50,000, and the second runner-up 25,000 rupees.
However, the organisers say there are no major funders. From among a few donors, the biggest one of rupees 50,000 came from Phendhey Che-Kyong Sorig Tibetan Herbal Clinic in Sudher near Dharamshala. Kunga Guest House donated 10,000 rupees, and a supporter from Munbai donated 10,000 rupees. They are also expecting some contribution from Hotel Association of McLeod Ganj.
Organised since 2012, the Miss Himalaya Pageants celebrate and empower young Himalayan women, their unique culture, and the pristine environment around them.
The Finale Night will be at the Club House, McLeod Ganj, at 6 pm on Saturday.
