The Mundgod football team from South India won the Gyalyum Chenmo Memorial Gold Cup, beating Clement Town football team in the penalty shootout.
Shining for the tournament, the Mundgod goalkeeper saved two goals in the penalty shootout helping his team to lift the cup.
Both the teams scored a goal each in the 90 minutes play. The game was poised into going to extra-time of 20 minutes, which remained scoreless draw, and the match went to the penalty shootout.
The first goal came from Mundgod, but equaliser came soon after. In the second half, Clement Town had lots of the ball but they couldn’t score.
In the penalty shootout, Mundgod players netted all the penalty kickout.
It was Mundgod’s second consecutive year of winning the tournament.
President of the Central Tibetan Administration Lobsang Sangay presented the cup and the cheque of 1.2 lakh rupees (1,700 USD approx) to the winners.
Earlier Mundgod defeated Kollegal team in the semi-final 2-1, and last week they defeated Bir United 2-1, which followed after they defeated Shillong team 4-0, and Dhasa team by a score of 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament on 31 May.
Speaking after winning the cup, team captain Samdup said, “We have worked hard in the last many months. We are now going to take a good rest.”
The next year’s tournament will be played in Clement Town near Dehra Dun.
