Tibet Sun Roving Editor
NEW YORK CITY, US, 9 August 2018
The 10th anniversary of news website TibetSun.com was commemorated in a low-profile event at a corner in Jackson Heights, a neighbourhood of New York City which Tibetans have made their hub.
Proprietor and Editor of the website, Lobsang Wangyal, said that the site is one of a few English-language news, views, and analysis portals on Tibet and Tibetan affairs. He also spoke about the visions, achievements, and challenges of the website.
A handful of Tibetans attended the event, but it was shown live and shared on social networking sites, reaching thousands in a few hours.
The TibetSun.com website was launched in McLeod Ganj, India, on 8.8.8 — 8 August 2008 — coinciding with the opening of the Beijing Olympics.
Since then it has consistently run unique opinion pieces, features, and interviews, and made a major contribution to Tibetan society and history with its free and open comments section.
In 2016 Tibet Sun posted detailed results of the preliminary and final rounds of the exile Tibetan elections for Parliament and Sikyong (President).
Being in continuous existence for so long, the site’s content serves as a resource for Tibetan exile history, and is to be maintained well into the future. All content is archived and freely available — never deleted in “site rebuilds” or blocked off from the public behind “walls”.
Wangyal said that the site is celebrating ten years of free, frank, and fearless journalism, and the reportage is based on high standards of ethics.
