Former Tibetan political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen has escaped to freedom in the US, and joined his wife and four children in San Francisco, according to media reports.
In 2008 he was imprisoned for six years on charges of subversion by the Chinese government. He had made a documentary, Leaving Fear Behind with senior Tibetan monk Jigme Gyatso, and smuggled the tapes out of Tibet. Dhondup Wangchen and Jigme Gyatso were detained in Tong De, Qinghai Province, during the 2008 Tibetan unrest.
The film shows interviews with ordinary Tibetan people praising the Dalai Lama and complaining how their culture is being destroyed.
Wangchen was released from prison in June 2014 in Qinghai provincial capital Xining. He remained under tight surveillance, with his movements and communications monitored.
