Ven Tarha Tenzin Choenyi, former secretary of the private office of the Dalai Lama, passed away on Monday at 93. He was one of the few remaining staff of the Government of Tibet in Lhasa.
As a mark of respect, the staff members of the Central Tibetan Administration held a prayer service in the afternoon.
Ven Tarha Tenzin Choenyi was born in 1920 in Gyantse, 260 km south-east of Lhasa. He joined the administrative services of the then Government of Tibet in 1935. He served in various capacities and projects in the government until he fled to India following the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959.
In exile he served as a secretary to the Dalai Lama from 1960 until he retired in 2001. However, after retirement, he remained as an advisor till January 2012.
Ven Tarha’s autobiography had been published by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in its oral history series.
