The Dalai Lama warned about the unintended consequences of violence during a lecture at the College of William and Mary.

The 77-year-old exiled Buddhist spiritual leader of Tibet spoke to more than 8,000 people at the school’s basketball arena with nearly 10,000 others viewing live online. He made his point about the unexpected nature of violence by referencing the recently-ended U.S. war in Iraq, which he has criticized for years.

He said that sometimes force is relied upon too frequently. He said that while former President George W. Bush’s goal to bring democracy to Iraq was good, a new approach other than violence is needed when there are problems in the world.

His comments come amid high tensions in the Middle East and on the Korean peninsula.
