Will 2011 be an 'Ooh-la-la' year?

There’s no better way to start your brand new year with this self-analytic question like what SUCCESS magazine publisher Darren Hardy wrote on his blog, Are you feeling a little bummed or even disappointed in where you are in life right now?

Are you a little down on yourself about how you have let your body go… or your relationships wane a bit… or maybe you’re frustrated about the fact you aren’t doing better in your job or business… or you haven’t been the parent you wanted to be?

He says, “No matter what your past has been, you have a spotless future.”

So, instead of nitpicking on our past, better be prepared for a new beginning. Let us not succumb to the ‘could have’, ‘would have’ and ‘should have’ syndromes. Because in life, always remember, when one door closes another door opens up! TS Eliot wrote in his Little Gidding, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

So, to make a new beginning we have to say good bye to the year gone bye so that we could roll into another New Year. This is perfect time for us to unwind from the daily humdrum of life and enjoy the luxury of inward contemplation and give serious thoughts on the past one year! Whether we are content with the life we are leading today or not, it is the most opportune time to redesign our life and tune it according to the vagaries of time.

Personally, I feel elated having just finished reading a leadership/self-help book that grounded, inspired and transformed me into a whole new ‘me’. More importantly, the best part about ending the year on a positive note is that it brought a shift in my attitude and the way I take life generally. Therefore, taking this opportunity I thought it best to spread the word so that some of you would benefit from the wisdom that I gained from the book I read.

Apart from going about performing the rituals of making resolutions, I deem it best to stroke our inner leadership fire so that all of us , no matter where we work, can lead without a title !The wisdom I am going to share with you is from the book ‘The leader who had no title’ by the leadership guru Robin Sharma.

Among many other things, I’ve learnt how to work like a superstar, regardless of my position; method to recognise and then seize opportunities in times of deep change; hard-hitting tactics to become mentally strong and physically tough enough to lead my world; ways to defeat stress, build an unbeatable mindset and balance my personal life.

You need not title to be a leader: Success (business and personal) is something that’s consciously created. To lead without a title “you will have to be unrealistically persistent and wildly courageous.”

Turbulent times build great leaders: Challenging times in both business and life give us great opportunities to learn and transform ourselves. “Problems and difficult days are actually good for you.”

The deeper your relationships, the stronger your leadership: “Leave every single person who intersects your path better, happier, and more engaged than you found them.” Time spent forming deep relationships—in all aspects of life—will pay dividends down the road.

To be a great leader, first become a great person: Training and strengthening your inner leader will help you perform at extraordinary levels. The key is learning to lead yourself. In our world we define success by the things we have, not by the people we’ve become. The more self-awareness we develop the more likely we are to grow and help others.

Again to quote from SUCCESS, “Every New Year you set new goals for yourself. If you are like most Americans, by February your resolve is waning, by May you don’t even remember your resolutions, and then on 31 December you berate yourself saying, “How did I waste a whole year?

But, this year can be different! Only if you adopt and incorporate the above magic acronyms and implement them today in your life, beginning 1/1/11. Then, instead of admonishing yourself on 31 December 2011, you’ll be able to croon, Ooh La-la-la — Look how much I accomplished this year!
