Tibetans and supporters in Mundgod remember Tibetan martyrs

By Tenzin | Tibet Sun

More than 500 Tibetans and supporters gathered at the Gaden Jhangtse Monastery in South India for a candle light vigil to honour the Tibetans in Tibet who have set themselves on fire to protest against the continued Chinese occupation of Tibet and its repressive policies in the region.

“With Lobsang Jamyang, we have now witnessed the 17th case of self-immolation since the first immolation by Tapey in February 2009,” said Sonam Tenzin, Mundgod coordinator of Students for a Free Tibet-India.

“The series of protests in Ngaba, Kardze and other Tibetan areas are clear indication of China’s height of repression and Tibetans’ desire for freedom.”

The candle light vigil was organised by Mundgod chapter of Students for a Free Tibet to remember those Tibetans who have sacrificed their lives for the struggle of a free Tibet.

Doeguling Tibetan Settlement in Mundgod was established in 1966 with the help of the Government of India. It is the second largest Tibetan settlement in India after Bylakuppe, also in Karnataka state. Mundgod is an important centre of monastic education due to the presence of Drepung and Ganden, two of the three biggest monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism.
