The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Bangalore team won the 8th Rangzen Rolling basketball men’s cup, while the Tibetan Students Association Madras (TSAM) won the women’s trophy, on Saturday 26 November.

Eight teams: RTYC Bangalore, RTYC Vijaywada, TSAM White, RTYC Mysore, TSAM Blue, Bangalore Granite, Puducherry and Ex-TSAM took part in the three-day tournament at Jai Lalitha Stadium in Chennai.

In the men’s final match, RTYC Bangalore beat TSAM White, the team of Tibetan Students Association Madras. The semi-final match was between Bangalore Granite and TSAM White, and Team Mysore and Bangalore RTYC.

In the women’s final, team TSAM beat Bangalore RTYC, and retained the cup for the third consecutive year.

The closing ceremony began at 5pm. Mr GA Rajkumar, an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, and Aasha Reddy, a long-time supporter of the Tibetan cause, were the chief guests.

Rangzen Rolling Trophies were handed over to the winning teams, and all participants were honoured with certificate of merit for their participation. TSAM president gave the word of thanks and he also honoured the guests with memento and khata [traditional Tibetan white scarf].

The Rangzen Rolling tournament was created as a platform for the college students across India to build a students’ network and unity.

Speaking on the background of the tournament, President of TSAM Rinchen Namgyal said, “A united youth is a strong asset for any nation.”

Cultural performances and an English debate followed the tournament. Five teams participated in the debate on the topic: “Tibetans should not adopt self-immolation in their freedom movement.” Students from RTYC Bangalore, TSAM, Mysore, Vijayawada and Ex-Tsam students participated in the debate. TSAM and Vijayawada students both stood in first position, followed by Ex-TSAM, Mysore and Bangalore.
