Several organisations in Mcleod Ganj are joining hands to organise an event celebrating fifty years of friendship and understanding among Indians and Tibetans in Dharamshala.

The Dalai Lama will attend the function on 15 June at Tsugla Khang temple, where the local Indians will conduct havan (a fire ritual) along with a chanting ceremony for the long life of the Tibetan leader.

The Dalai Lama has been living in Mcleod Ganj, a hill-top village in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh, since 1960, after the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959. He has since established the Tibetan government-in-exile there, and campaigns for autonomy for Tibet.

China vilifies the Dalai Lama as a “separatist” and accuses him of leading a campaign to split Tibet from the rest of the country.

In April, Tibetans organised a function called “Thank you Himachal” to mark the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama setting foot in the state. The Dalai Lama thanked the people and the government of the state for providing shelter to him and thousands of other Tibetan refugees.

The function on 15 June is organised by Beopar Mandal, Bhagsu Taxi Union, Hotel Association, Trekkers Association, Auto Union and Indo-Tibetan Friendship Association.
