Thupten Dhargay, a 30-year-old youth, was stabbed on his chest by 23-year-old Tashi Phuntsok after Dhargay accused him of stealing his mobile phone at a friend’s residence in Ramesh Market in south Delhi’s Amar colony area, Inspector Manoj Kumar told Tibet Sun by phone. On Saturday night Dhargay and his friends had gathered at a friend’s place in Ramesh Market, which has become a hub of about 400 Tibetans, mostly students and call centre employees. Tashi Phuntsok, who hails from Darjeeling, showed up at the gathering. He had allegedly consumed liquor. Dhargay noticed that his mobile had been stolen, which was found with Tashi Phuntsok, because of which he was badly scolded and driven out by Dhargay’s friends. In a fit of fury, Tashi Phuntsok came back with a knife to retaliate and stabbed on Dhargay’s chest. Dhargay was immediately taken to hospital by his friends, but he died on the way around 12.30 am Sunday before reaching hospital. Police arrested the accused Tashi Phuntsok early Sunday morning under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, and has been sent to Tihar jail until court takes up his case. South Delhi Tibetan Association had organised a special prayer meeting at Japanese temple on Sunday evening 3 pm to offer prayer for the victim. Around 80 people including students of Delhi University had gathered to pray for the deceased. This is the second stabbing death case involving Tibetans in Delhi in the recent past. In January, a youth was stabbed to death by another Tibetan in Majnu ka Tilla. Thupten Dhargay was born in Tibet. He escaped to India many years ago. He had completed his schooling from Central School for Tibetans in Mussoorie in north India. Copyright © 2010 Tibet Sun Published in Tibet Sun
