Italian NGO honours Tibetan youth leader

An Italian youth organisation has honoured a Tibetan youth leader in recognition of his works for the cause of a free Tibet.

Italian Nationwide Youth Movement President Giovanni Donzelli presented the award to Chime Youngdung, President of the National Democratic Party of Tibet, on 10 September in the Italian capital Rome. Chemi was the fourth person to receive the award since its inception.

Donzelli said the award symbolises friendship, support and the the Italian people’s strong desire to work for the cause of Tibet.

In his acceptance message, Chime expressed his appreciation for the award and for the hospitality of the Italians, and appealed to the Italian people to continue their support for the Tibetan cause.

Chime is leading a group of 15 Tibetan college students who are participating in a workshop on Democracy from 9-27 September in Rome. The workshop is financed by several Italian Tibet support groups.

World Action Tibet-Italy coordinator Riccardo Zerbetto and other friends of Tibet welcomed the Tibetan group.

The Tibetans have met with various NGO leaders including the President of the Italian Youth council, Antonio Di Napoli; the President of the General Labour Union, Antonio Polica; and the President of Laogoi Research Foundation Italia, Toni Brandi.

The group also met with Italian Youth Minister Giorgia Meloni, who made a statement during the Beijing Olympics against the Chinese occupation in Tibet. Meloni has met the Dalai Lama twice in the past.

Some past winners of the award include human rights activist Ms Pelikalova of Czechoslovakia; Don Gelmini, a priest who worked against drug abuse; and Mr Clemente Russo, a boxing champion. Mr Russo made a pro-Tibet statement during last year’s Beijing Olympic Games.
