Members of Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) attended a week-long festival of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) in Hungary.

Vice President of TYC Dhondup Dorjee and Public Relations Secretary Tenzin Yangdon were among over 3000 young socialists and social democrats from 143 different organisations from around the world took part in the event.

The festival, hosted by the youth wing of the Hungarian Socialist Party, took place in Zanka, Hungary, from 15 to 21 July.

Prime Minister of Hungary Mr Gordon Bajnai opened the festival while welcoming the participants.

Dorjee was among the five member panelists in the Asia pacific regional seminar on “The democracy in Asia” which was moderated by Ms Jacinda Ardern, who is currently a Member of Parliament of New Zealand, and the President of IUSY.

Dorjee gave a presentation about the situation in Tibet since 10 March 2008 and the Beijing Olympics.

He also spoke about the evolving Tibetan democracy in exile, and the roles TYC play in furthering the democratic processes.

The Dalai Lama and about 150,000 Tibetans live in exile, majority of whom are in India, Nepal and Bhutan, since 1959 after China invaded Tibet.

In an email message Dorjee said that the week-long festival focused on global issues such as climate change, economic crisis and poverty.

He further said that the event gave an opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen the global network of young people working for promoting democracy, fighting injustice and human rights violations.
