Former Indian defence minister George Fernandes arrived in Dharamshala to meet with the the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders.

Fernandes is accompanied by former deputy union minister Ajay Singh, according to a statement posted on the website of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

The dignitaries were escorted from Delhi by the Deputy Speaker of Tibetan Parliament-in-exile Mrs Dolma Gyari.

Officials in the government-in-exile said Fernandes is also likely to participate in the celebrations of the Dalai Lama’s birthday 6 July, reports IANS news service.

During their two-week sojourn in the hill-top town, they will also visit various Tibetan institutions.

Fernandes has been a staunch supporter of the Tibetan cause for a long time. His tenure as the defence minister in the National Democratic Alliance Government from 1998-2004 was a controversial one, and branded China as India’s enemy no. 1.
