A monk beaten to death by Chinese police in KardzeTibet Sun newsroom | Tibet Sun DHARAMSHALA, India, 30 March 2009![]() Phuntsok, 27 years of age, of Drango monastery in Kardze, Sichuan Province, was beaten to death by the Chinese police in a ghastly manner on 25 March.File photo/TCHRD handout Chinese police have beaten a Tibetan monk to death after he called for Tibetans to abstain from farming to mourn the deaths, torture and imprisonment of Tibetans for their protest for freedom, reports Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD). The monk named Phuntsok, 27 years of age, of Drango monastery in Kardze, Sichuan Province, was beaten to death by the Chinese police in a ghastly manner on 25 March. Phuntsok pasted posters on the walls of a police headquarters, a bridge, trees, and the highway, calling on the local Tibetans to abstain from farming and harvesting as a gesture of mourning for people who were killed, tortured and imprisoned by the Chinese authorities for their involvement in anti-government protests since a year ago. However, police saw Phuntsok pasting the posters on the wall of an automobile service centre, and came to arrest him. Phuntsok fled on a motorcycle but the police pursued him. Police arrested him after his motorcycle failed to carry him further. He was severely beaten on the spot with batons and he died shortly after. The police dropped his dead body at a base of a hill and forged a suicide scene. Tibetans learned about his death a day later and cremated the body after three days. Sources told TCHRD that there were bruises and cuts on his body which clearly indicated that Phuntsok was beaten to death. TCHRD is also reporting that police arrested 11 Tibetans from Da-do village for defying orders by the Chinese authorities to till their farmlands on 27 March. The 11 arrested Tibetans were surrounded by police forces and were taken on a parade in the village. They were last seen in a hospital, surrounded by police. There current situation and whereabouts is not known. Copyright © 2009 Tibet Sun Published in Tibet Sun
