Chinese authorities reacted by announcing, “Anyone who defies farming will face arrest and their land will be officially confiscated.” A 27-year-old monk, Jampa Dhondup, has been arrested in the afternoon of 19 March 2009 over his alleged involvement in the farming boycott movement, which is said to be gaining momentum in the region. Dhondup was a monk at Tse-tsang Monastery, but he originally hails from Phogyis-nang Tseg-leg Village, in Kardze, Sichuan Province. Several members of Dhondup’s family have been involved in anti-government protests in spring 2008. Kardze witnessed a number of protests against the Chinese rule in Tibet since March 2008. The protesters were subsequently arrested, detained and sentenced by Chinese authorities. TCHRD says that since March 2009 at least 28 incidents of protests were reported in Kardze with authorities detaining more than 60 protesters. Copyright © 2009 Tibet Sun Published in Tibet Sun
