Chinese authorities have arrested a Tibetan youth in Mangra, Amdo, suspecting him of anti-government activities, while his younger brother disappeared few days before the arrest, according to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).

Tashi Dhondup, 27, was arrested at his home on 12 March 2009, and was brought to Mangra detention centre. He was serving in the government in Mangra in north-eastern Tibet. Jinpa Gyatso, the younger brother of Dhondup disappeared few days before his arrest.

Security forces arrested Dhondup without any explanation, and seized his computer and mobile phone for investigation.

Jinpa Gyatso, 25 years of age, was a student at a higher college in Xining city, the provincial capital of Qinghai Province.

Monks from Lutsang Monastery in Mangra staged anti-government protests during Losar, the Tibetan New Year, on 25 February.

Since then security around Mangra has been increased, phones were tapped and movements restricted.

TCHRD says that the ground situation in Mangra appeared to be volatile and tense.
