Tibetans living in Nepal with some foreign supporters staged a demonstration in front of the Chinese Embassy’s visa section in Kathmandu on Saturday, with police arresting two pro-Tibet Westerners soon after they began the demonstration, reports say.

Police only gave the two western protesters’ nationalities as a Norwegian man and a British woman, but did not give further details.

Hundreds of policemen surrounded the embassy and visa office, which are in two different locations in Kathmandu, to enforce a ban on protests outside the buildings.

Nepal has beefed up security to block Tibetan demonstrations during two sensitive anniversaries — Saturday marks one year since protests against Chinese rule in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa turned violent, and the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising on 10 March that sent the Dalai Lama into exile.

Tibetan protesters circled the Bouddhanath stupa several times shouting anti-China slogans, but no one was arrested from the protest in Bouddha.
