Iceland’s Friends of Tibet Protest at Chinese Embassy

Iceland Review

The Icelandic association Friends of Tibet organised protests outside the Embassy of China in Reykjavík on Tuesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet and support for the Tibetan nation.

“Friends of Tibet participate in an international action to show support for the Tibetan nation in its fight for human rights and religious freedom,” a declaration from the association, published on dv.is, reads.

Protests also took place outside the Chinese Embassy in Reykjavík in March last year and one foreign activist, Jan Jiricek, splashed red paint on the embassy building in order “to raise awareness of human rights violation by Chinese authorities in Tibet.”

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to give a presentation in Laugardalshöll sports and concert hall in Reykjavík on 2 June; a group of Icelanders have lobbied for his visit since 2005.
