The Tibetan parliament-in-exile congratulated Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) for re-election as the new Speaker of the US Congress on 6 January, when the US House of Representatives and the Senate convened for the 111th Congress with new members elected on 4 November elections.

Dolma Gyari, the Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, sent a letter to Pelosi on 9 January, in which she wrote, “We are confident that you will take the Congress forward, and will once again succeed to lead the House to rise to the challenge, recognizing that one’s love of country is stronger than the issues.”

“We continue to cherish your visit to Dharamshala; coming as a beautiful ray of hope at a time when we Tibetans were facing one of the darkest times in our history . We thank you for your support to the peaceful initiatives of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.”

Pelosi became the first woman to be re-elected, beating her Republican rival with an overwhelming majority to the post of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Our nation needs action, and we need action now,” Pelosi said after the opening of the House.

Pelosi led a US Congressional delegation to Dharamshala in March 2008 to meet the Dalai Lama to assure Tibetans of their support for their cause, while the whole of Tibet was in turmoil with anti-China protests and the subsequent military crackdown.
