Obama became the first black president in US history. Kelsang Yangkyi Takla, minister for the Department of Information and International Relations of the Tibetan government-in-exile, wrote in a message to Obama the hopes that he will guide the United States to peace and prosperity. She expressed confidence that under Mr Obama’s leadership the US will continue to extend the same support for the people of Tibet. Democratic Senator Barack Obama of Illinois captured the White House, defeating Republican John McCain, to become the 44th president of the Unites States. Obama has long supported the Tibetan cause. He wrote to the Dalai Lama in July this year expressing his willingness to support the rights of the Tibetans. Referring to the dialogue between the envoys of the Dalai Lama and the Chinese leaders, Obama wrote: “I am hopeful that the process of dialogue and negotiations will bring positive results.” He hoped that the process of dialogue will continue beyond the Beijing Olympics, and pledge that he will continue to support it. “The right to practice their religious beliefs without punishment or obstruction is one that should be accorded the people of Tibet, and I will continue to encourage the Chinese government to put aside its suspicions and act in accordance with its own constitution,” he continued.
