Tibet: Newspapers flourishing, double-digit growth annually over five years

Tibet’s media industry is flourishing, according to a [PRC] white paper published entitled, “Protection and Development of Tibetan Culture.”

Today, Tibet has 23 newspapers and 34 periodicals, with each of the country’s seven prefectures and cities having a Tibetan newspaper and Han Chinese newspaper, according to the white paper

Tibet printed 55.5mn newspapers and 2.67mn periodicals in 2007, recording double-digit growth annually over five years.

... according to a [PRC] white paper published entitled, “Protection and Development of Tibetan Culture.”

The Internet and mobile phones have also developed rapidly since its inception in 1997. Tibet had 760 websites, 82,858 Internet subscribers and some 200,000 netizens in 2007, accounting for six percent of the total population of Tibet.

Mobile phones were launched in Tibet in August 1993, with a capacity for just 4,500 mobile subscribers; today Tibet has 800,000 mobile phone subscribers.

The white paper notes that the rapid expansion of all media in Tibet has enriched peoples lives.
